What is hearing?

Hearing or audition (a sense usually neglect) is the sense of sound perception through mechanoreceptors located in the inner ear. Our ability to hear and understand connects us with other people and the environment.

Wellbeing can be diminished by not having good auditory health, communication and social interactions are restricted. Hearing loss is predominantly a natural part of the aging process; in nine out of 10 cases, hearing loss is related to aging.

What is hearing loss?

Reduced hearing

Hearing loss is a natural consequence of getting older. It usually starts between 30 and 40 years old. More than half of the population at 80 suffers from significant hearing loss which carries social, psychological, and physical problems.

Degree of loss

How do we measure hearing loss? The severity of hearing loss depends on how loud a sound must be for an individual to hear it. Hearing loss categorization goes from mild to moderate, severe, and profound.

Types of hearing loss

Neurosensory hearing loss occurs as a natural part of growing older; it accounts for about 90% of all hearing loss. It is commonly caused by damage to the inner ear (the cochlea) by exposure to loud sounds, head injuries, genetics, diseases, tumors, and certain powerful medications.

Conductive hearing loss is another type where a mechanical problem in the outer or middle ear interferes with the transmission of sound waves to the inner ear.

Present

Prolonged use of modern multimedia devices such as tablets, PCs, etc can irreversibly damage the eye due to the dryness associated with less eye blinking. It is recommended to take frequent breaks and avoid proximity, the recommended distance from devices is 45 to 65 centimeters in order to reduce fatigue.
